What is scratchboard?
- Scratchboard is made of heavy cardboard or Masonite to which the manufacturer applied a layer of smooth white clay to one side.
- The artists uses a brush, or sometimes a pen, to apply ink to the scratchboard.
- In the next step the artist uses a tool with a fine point to remove lines of ink from the scratchboard, revealing the white surface. It is like drawing in reverse.
- Sometimes colored inks or watercolor are then added to the piece.
- Scratchboard allows the artist to create fine detail and subtle shadings.
